These kids have talent!
Ms. Cohen is running a Guitar Club that meets once a week. The students in Grades 4 & 5 are learning introductory guitar skills. What a gift! The students meet before school for their instruction. The groups rotate every 6 weeks. Thanks Ms. Cohen.
Hands on Learning!
Third Grade Students each had an opportunity to show off their Science experiments. Mr. Staples asked each child some questions to test their knowledge of the subject matter. That is what we call formative assessment in education. The results suggested that the students learned a great deal!
New Addition in Grade 1
The students in first grade have only had the Smart Board for a week but Ms. Barry is already using it often to make class more interactive and engaging. The students read stories displayed largely on the board together at snack time. In the pictures here the large dice roll when touched and the students are asked to write the corresponding number sentence.
Famous Americans
Mrs. Zukas' room recently completed Famous American Reports. Each student was given the project criteria and encouraged to use creativity to convey their learning. The oral presentations were just wonderfully informative. I was impressed with comfortable they were presenting their reports. The picture below shows some of the finished products.

More Great Know Atoms Science
Mrs. Brennan’s fifth grade class conducted a science experiment on the effects of pollution. The experiment involved planting seeds in various soil samples. Some had soil with pollutants such as baby oil and baking soda, among others. The students will watch and record observations over the next few weeks and compare the control group to the experimental test tube sample. It was an especially exciting day because the learning extended beyond students. We had special observers during this lesson. We had Francis Vigeant, CEO of Know Atom, and Mrs. Gaudette, a teacher from Connery visit. As a group of professionals we have broadened our learning by incorporating some professional collaboration and reflection into our Science instruction. After the lesson the team met to debrief and reflect on the lesson. As I observed the lesson, I recorded some powerful student quotes. When the students put on their safety goggles, Carter said, "I feel smarter already!" As the students listened to detailed directions from Mrs. Brennan, Adam exclaimed, "I can't wait to do this, I feel like a real scientist." A student new to our school said, "this is so cool, we didn't do this stuff at our old school." Student engagement is a beautiful thing!
Rotary Club Visit
Recently the Lynn Rotary Club visited the Lynn Woods School to distribute student dictionaries to all the third grade students. This has become an annual tradition that is greatly appreciated. This year we had two wonderful Rotary members, Mr. Richardson and Mr. Harris visit to present the dictionaries. We thank them both. A special thank you to Mr. Harris who is a grandparent of one of our Kindergarten super stars!
